O2 prices up the latest iPhone

You might need the calculator

O2 has confirmed its pricing on the new iPhone, and will give away the 3G version of Apple's baby for £45 a month from the 11th of July.

Punters who only want to spend £30 a month will have to shell out £99 on the 8GB model, and £159 for 16GB of storage. Even those prepared to spend £45 a month will have to find £59 for 16GB, and only those willing to sign up to £75 a month will get more free storage than they could ever fill with music.

Not that the storage will be restricted to music. Now that the super-phone can install applications, even if it's only those formally approved by Apple, anything is possible.

O2, like Apple, is advertising the new 3G iPhone as being "twice as fast as the first generation iPhone", which begs some questions. At the launch Steve Jobs stated high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) was supported, which should give a potential speed of at least 1.8Mb/sec. This means O2 is being either very honest about the real-world performance of HSDPA, or optimistic about how quick their EDGE network is.

O2 does seem to have another exclusive, so Apple fans in the UK are still going to be limited to that network at least for the moment: O2 hasn't yet responded to our question about how long that exclusive will last. ®
