Nintendo DS launching anti-smoking drive

Playing on a Nintendo DS whilst clutching a cigarette is difficult. So, videogame firm Ubisoft is developing a title to transform you into a two-handed and healthier gamer.

Ubisoft’s videogame is based on techniques promoted in books written by anti-smoking guru Allen Carr. In the videogame though, smokers players begin by entering a history of their addiction, such as 60 cigs each day for the last 20 years, and then choose a personal coach to guide them through the quitting process.

There are 15 anti-smoking games to choose from, including one set in a disco where a cigarette-shaped monster tries to pull the gamer outside for a smoke. Players must draw lines onscreen that connect themselves to the other virtual dancers, in order to stop the cig-monster pulling them outside.

A so-called “path to freedom” also helps gamers track their daily anti-smoking progress. Ubisoft’s game then offers rewards to players, such as by suggesting a nice meal out. But, you’ll have to skip the usual after-dinner treat.

Once you've kicked the filthy habit then the game is also designed to help you “measure the daily benefits you get from your new life without cigarettes”. Like being able to walk up a flight of stairs without coughing and wheezing.

Ubisoft’s game will be available on the Nintendo DS in November.
