Motorola movie-making banana phone arrives in UK

Mobile movie madness

Motorola has finally launched its Z10 movie phone into the UK, over four months since the Z8 "kick-slider" successor first appeared, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The handset retains the same basic size and shape and the Z8, which was the first Motorola handset to feature an angled slider mechanism point that enables the bottom half of the phone to curve, banana-like around the contours of the user’s jaw-line. The 3G device supports quad-band GSM/GPRS/Edge connections and HSDPA at up to 3.6Mbp/s.

The Z10’s chief selling point is an ability to capture video at 30 frames per second at 320 × 240 resolution - putting it on a par with Sony Ericsson’s Cyber-shot K850i. Users can edit video directly through the Z10 and ‘stitch’ scenes together using motion blurs or screen wipes, before adding a storyboard and uploading the finished masterpiece directly onto YouTube.

Still images can also be captured with the 3.2-megapixel camera and stored on Micro SD cards of up to 32GB. Content can be watched back on the phone’s 2.2in display, but when we tried the handset out we found the screen’s size a little too small for reviewing any of the films we'd shot.

Motorola’s Z10 is available now in the UK, with most networks offering the phone for between free and £150 (€190/$300), depending on your chosen tariff.
