MySQL chief recommits to Linux under Sun

Expands mandate

MySQL User Conference Under its new owner, Sun Microsystems, MySQL will remain true to its Linux roots and won’t be pulled towards Solaris or become overshadowed by the Solaris-distributed Postgres.

Former chief executive Marten Mickos told Uberpulse that MySQL would stay focused on Linux, which accounts for the majority of its business (Windows rules when it comes to downloads). The MySQL team will work on Solaris "but in proportion to what it represents in our marketplace."

Mickos also said that in his new role as vice president of Sun's database group, he has an expanded remit, beyond just MySQL. His team also works with Java, memcached and an internal Sun database engine in addition to open-source competitor Postgres on data management. The 400-strong MySQL operation has added 65 Sun employees to its ranks, working on performance tuning and porting of products.

He added that Postgres has a "completely different technology and market focus" to MySQL, suggesting there'd be little competition between the two.
