Symantec shines storage management software for Server 2008

Five point — oh, it'll be out in June

Symantec today is giving a good three-month notice that point upgrades for Veritas Storage Foundation and Server Cluster Software are on the way.

Slated for a June release, Storage Foundation and Veritas Cluster Server 5.1 for Windows updates OS and hardware compatibility, adds some new wizards, and improved performance.

Both pieces of software add support for Windows Server 2008 and expand compatibility with Vista, Exchange 2007 SP1, SharePoint Portal Server 2007, Symantec Enterprise Vault 2007 and BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The update also makes nice with Pillar and 3Par storage arrays, as well as newer boxes from IBM and Hitachi Data Systems.

Storage Foundation adds SmartMove, a feature for storage and application migration by making sure only the necessary blocks of data are moved. The software also gets new wizards for application point-in-time recovery, and automated snapshot recovery to Exchange Recovery Storage Groups.

Foundation also gets Configuration Checker, which identifies configuration-related installation errors and incompatible hardware and software.

Server Cluster gets the ability to dynamically discover physical and virtual clusters across Unix, Linux and WIndows.

The updates will hit the street in June at a starting price of $695 per server. ®
