LG claims DVD optical rewriters are sexy

The IT crowd has known for years that DVD drives can be sexy, and now LG is looking to push this message out to fashion-conscious consumers. It has developed two external drives that, it claims, blend portable functionality with a dash of style and, ahem, sex appeal.

The GSA-E5ON and GSA-E5OL models both measure 16.5 x 15.6, so they won't slip easily into your back pocket of your drainpipe jeans. But they do measure just 2.1cm thick, so retain some skinny fashion credentials. Each offer 8x optical read and write capabilities for most formats, including DVD±R/RW and DVD-RAM discs, although some formats, such as DVD-R DL only write at 4x speeds.

Both drives are compatible with Windows Vista, but there's no mention of compatibility with Macs.

Both drives are powered through a USB 2.0 connection and designed to be moved around between PCs. In addition, LG has included a content protection software application that enables users to secure and prevent the loss of sensitive data, such as passwords, copy protection and digital signatures.

The GSA-E5OL model features support for the LightScribe disc label etching technology.

Both drives ship in either black or white, are available now and retail for £40 (€63/$80) for the GSA-E50N and £50 (€73/$100) for the GSA-E50L.
