China jails 'subversive' net dissident

Four years' jail for anti-government articles

China today jailed a "dissident" net author for four years on charges of "inciting to subvert state power", Reuters reports.

The Intermediate People's Court in Hangzhou, capital of the eastern province of Zhejiang, convicted Chen Shuqing of posting anti-government articles online. His lawyer Li Jianqiang said: "It's totally wrong to convict him... He was only expressing his political views. He should enjoy free speech."

Chen will reportedly appeal, but may need to find himself a new lawyer. Li was barred from practicing for one year by authorities in his home province of Shandong, allegedly because he took on "too many sensitive cases", as he put it. ®
