Sony carries in portable DVD player

Some might prefer a low-cost 14in laptop for cheap on-the-move DVD playback, but if you fancy a more dedicated device, how about Sony's latest portable DVD player, the DVP-FX850, that's ready to go without Windows.

The unit is based around an 8in widescreen display that can open out through 180°. The optical drive can read all but the latest HD media and will display and play MP3, JPEG and DivX files stored on data discs. It'll even handle MP3s and JPEGs on Flash drives plugged into its USB port.

The DVP-FX850 has a pair of earphone sockets - handy for kids stuck in the back of the car - but the unit also has digital optical outputs for hi-fi connections and an A/V jack for plugging it into a TV.

Sony claimed the player has a six-hour battery life, but it also comes with a world power supply, for the wide-ranging traveller.

Expect to pay around £250 for it.
