Nokia lobs another legal grenade at Qualcomm

Nokia has filed another lawsuit against Qualcomm in their ever-growing list of patent spats.

This time, Nokia claims that Qualcomm's MediaFlo and Brew technologies infringe its patents. Qualcomm's last filing against Nokia covered software download and execution environments.

The filing was made at the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

Qualcomm is expected to argue that the court should suspend this case until the American Arbitration Association has reached a conclusion on the broader patent battle between the two companies, while denying that it's infringed any patents, of course.

The timing isn't good for Qualcomm which is still suffering from a ban on phones featuring some of its chips being imported into the US, as a result of failing to settle an unrelated patent battle with Broadcom. That ban is particularly hurting LG and Motorola, though pretty much everyone except Nokia will be affected (Nokia makes its own chips).

This new filing from Nokia looks a little like sabre-rattling, showing off the range of possible patent infringements it could file if it wanted to make a fight of it, but it's not something Qualcomm's lawyers wanted to start the week with. ®
