Paris and Lara share a cell with rude speeder

Comments We recently rolled out comments pages to most stories on the site, and it seems we opened a bit of a floodgate. You guys just won't shut up. And in the best traditions of appeasement we are announcing a new regular feature: a Best of Comments article. We may just be crazy.

First up, a speeding motorist made a rude gesture at a camera. Not really news perhaps, except that his helmet and lack of a front number plate made him unidentifiable, at least until BMW and the police tracked him down. A reader offered an explanation for the visor:

That's why you should put your visor down. Stops your eyes from watering. And flies. Bunblebee up your noise at 80+ really stings.....

Another had both an explanation and a cautionary note:

They could've found him by trawling the registration database for that make of bicycle, age of owner, geographic location, etc and narrowing it down to a single rider.

Of course, the Government assures us this sort of fishing expedition will never happen with the ID card database...

Highly-talented heiress (am I allowed to use that phrase, Lester?) Paris Hilton, who was sentenced to 45 days in jail for violating probation, has had her sentence reduced to 23 days. Many of you were not pleased:

'reserved for "celebrities, public officials, police officers, and other high-profile inmates"'...

Why do these people get special treatment? If you commit a crime, your level of fame shouldn't enter into the equation to determin your sentencing!

If anything, if you happen to be a public role-model, surely you should be treated worse to send the right message to those that lookup to you.

Public-Officials are the ones that make the laws, so it is obviouls that they'll want to get themselves and their celebrity friends a good deal.

Punishment should fit the crime, not the criminal's lifestyle.

I suppose that qualifys as good behaviour, and being a good role model, breaking the law time and time again.

She is not any type of an artist. she does not deserve the celebrity status. She is the daughter of a father who owns a hotel chain that makes a lot of money. She should get the full 45 days as any one would. This is a travisty of our justice system.

My, we're so shocked by this... it's nothing unusual. This is pretty much how it always works. People with money, people with some sort of clout or influence, are placed in special areas. This happens ALL THE TIME, not just for Paris Hilton, but for many privileged people. Really the only difference here is that this is more public than most such punishments.

Money always seems to find a way to make your life more comfortable, even if you have to do time.
