AMD plans July, October price cuts - report

Just like Intel, apparently

Details have emerged of the wide-ranging price cuts AMD is expected to implement later this month in response to Intel's launches of 'Merom' and 'Conroe' - the chip giant's next-generation architecture mobile and desktop Core 2 Duo processors.

On the mobile side, only the Athlon 64 4200+ and 3800+ will get cheaper this month, according to pricing details published by DailyTech. The 4200+'s price will fall from $389 to $200, the 3800+'s from $309 to $164, reductions of 48.6 and 46.9 per cent, respectively.

The Turion 64 ML line-up will see its members' prices fall by 5.5 per cent and 25.8 per cent, while the MT series' prices will be cut by 5.3-16.1 per cent. Turion TL prices will remain unchanged this time round, but on 23 October they will come down by between 16.3 per cent and 25.8 per cent.

AMD will introduce the Turion 64 TL-64 on 23 October, priced at $337. The MK-36 is set to launch this month at $146, the report claims.

The Socket AM2 Semprons will see their prices cut this month - by 5.3-16.1 per cent - but not in October. However, that's when AMD will prune older mobile Sempron prices, by 19.6-35.4 per cent, with most of them ending up costing $82.

On the desktop side, the FX-62's price will fall from $999 to $799, a reduction of 20 per cent, on 24 July. On the same day, surviving Athlon 64 X2s will see their prices cut by 42.2 per cent to 57.1 per cent, and the "energy efficient" Athlon 64 X2 EEs will experience price reductions of 32.1-54.2 per cent. The single-core Athlon 64 line's members will see their prices fall by between 23.3 per cent and 55.7 per cent.

Sempron family members prices will drop 14.9-43.8 per cent, while the Sempron EE prices will drop 5.9-29.2 per cent.

None of these desktop chips' prices will fall on 23 October. ®
