Google buys SGI . . .'s property

One darling to another

Full of cash and tired of paying rent, Google has moved to purchase the property that makes up its sprawling Mountain View headquarters.

As many of you know, Google currently inhabits the remains of SGI's once glorious headquarters. The ad-broker-cum-beta tester has been leasing land and buildings stretching from Amphitheatre Parkway across Shoreline Boulevard to Crittenden Lane. Now, Google will pony up $319m for the buildings and land.

Google has been right at home in SGI's odd, multi-colored complexes given that it's in many ways the new SGI. Where SGI enjoyed purple, green and yellow columns, Google likes to play with colored balls.

Google will need to secure approval for the purchase from the bankruptcy court that is currently overseeing SGI's Chapter 11 proceedings. Four real estate firms actually own Google's headquarters, which the company has been subleasing from SGI.

In addition, Google will have to cough up $315,000 per month to Mountain View for "ground leases" on the land, according to a regulatory filing. Mountain View's leases for the two properties finish in 2050 and 2051, respectively. One can only guess as to which Silicon Valley darling will be moving into the Googleplex then.

All told, Google is buying up close to 1m square feet of space.

Google's HQ is located just a couple of miles from Register central, but we don't receive many invites to hang out. ®
