Nvidia silently ships GeForce 7900 GS

Four fewer pixel processors than the 7900 GT?

Nvidia has quietly released a new GeForce 7900-class graphics chip. The company's web site now lists the GeForce 7900 GS, and Dell has just updated the built-to-order options for its XPS 600 gaming machine to include cards based on the GPU.

Like other GeForce 7900s, the GS features a 256-bit memory bus that, in this case, connects to 256MB of GDDR 3 SDRAM. The GPU's a 90nm part with 20 pixel processors, down from the 7900 GT's 24, DailyTech reports. Presumably it has lower memory and core clock frequencies too.

Adding a second GeForce 7900 GS-based card to the XPS 600 adds £188/$250 to the price, giving a ballpark figure for the board's price if it's made available for retail, so it's likely to be only slightly cheaper than the 7900 GT. ®
