EMC speeds towards the middle ground

4Gb/s Clariion call

Storage monolith EMC has juiced up its midrange Clariion series with fiber channel support up to 4Gb/s.

EMC says the new Clariion UltraScale architecture will double the performance and capacity of its predecessor. It's the first to offer full 4Gb/s fibre channel support, for up to 230TB of scalable storage.

Firms will be able to mix and match 2Gb/s and 4Gb/s drives with up to 480 in single array. Logical Unit Number software will continue to virtualise and divvy out the capacity within the array.

EMC is also set to unleash the CX3 storage system series to showcase the new architecture. Three offerings are on the table: the CX3-20, CX3-40, and CX3-80. Each is aimed at a different level of enterprise storage demand. The systems run from $27,000 to $101,000.

EMC Executive VP David Donatelli crowed: "[UltraScale] was specifically designed to deliver the industry's best performance, throughput and scalablity - by eliminating the bottlenecks."

The Clariion series has become increasingly important to EMC since it acquired the technology with its buyout of Data General Corp in 1999. Last year, mid range sales grew 32 per cent, compared to around 17 per cent across the full range. Clariion accounts for 18 per cent of EMC's business, mainly thanks to its cosy relationship with Dell.

The new kit is all available straight away through EMC's reseller chums, and partners Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens and Unisys. ®
