Mailbox Internet to close London office

Jobs a casualty of move

Mailbox Internet - one of the UK's oldest ISPs - is closing its London office just three months after being bought by Leeds-based 186k.

Staff were told just before Christmas that the Fulham office is due to close within the next couple of weeks.

Of the 16 people who worked at Mailbox, six employees declined an offer to stay with the company and relocate to Leeds, and will receive redundancy pay instead.

Two workers have agreed to make the trip to Yorkshire.

A further eight contractors have had their contracted terminated.

In a statement 186k told El Reg: "Following the successful acquisition of Mailbox Internet by 186k Limited, 186k has chosen to relocate operations from its Fulham base to its rapidly expanding Leeds Head Office.

"The quality of staff in Mailbox was excellent and 186k were extremely keen to maintain the resource within the organisation. All Mailbox employees were offered relocated positions, but unfortunately six staff members advised that personal circumstances restricted their planned move."

Mailbox, which was acquired last September, provides broadband services to around 10,000 business users in London and the south of England.

Said 186k COO, Roger Walker in a statement: "We have been working closely with Mailbox customers explaining that this move brings with it a multitude of significant benefits." ®
