New Palms cheaper than expected

$99 color and $299 WiFi models debut

Palm added new models to its Tungsten and Zire lines today, while kissing goodbye to the brand names it launched three years ago. It'll keep the T and Z identifiers, however, and the Treo and LifeDrive names will continue.

The T series gains a Wi-Fi capable model in the T|X. This Palm shares the same 320x480 resolution screen as its predecessors, 128MB of built-in flash memory, and an Xscale processor clocked at 312Mhz. That's slower than the well-loved T3, the best Palm of recent vintage, but in line with last year's T5.

The specifications leaked last month - but the price points are lower than expected. The T|X comes in at $299, while the low-end color model keeps the $99 price point. The new Z22 is a 3.4oz color model which replaces the monochrome Zire 21. The Z22 has more memory than the established - and slightly heavier - color Zire 31, which continues to be differentiated by an SD expansion slot. Palm continues to offer the Zire 31 at $129.®
