Bulldog unveils 8 meg broadband

Cable & Wireless (C&W) is challenging BT's dominance as a major broadband provider by unveiling an 8 meg service available to a third of the UK.

The unbundled product - which cuts BT out of the telecoms loop - means that punters can get broadband at speeds up to 8 meg starting from £15.50 for eight hours online a month. An unlimited 8 meg product costs £29.50 a month.

Through its Bulldog local loop unbundling (LLU) subsidiary, C&W is offering punters the chance to ditch BT as their telecoms provider and hook up to Bulldog instead.

Bulldog CEO Emanuele Angelidis said the launch of the 8 meg service showed how the LLU operator was "redefining the boundaries of the broadband market".

"Eight meg from Bulldog, with no download caps, gives customers the freedom to use the internet as they wish," he said.

By investing in LLU Bulldog is able to "physically connects us with our customers and enables us to fulfil a broad range of their needs - through internet access, telephony and many more value-added services in the near future", he said.

Last week C&W announced it was accelerating its broadband roll-out by doubling its investment in LLU. It has already unbundled 400 BT exchanges and now intends to wire up a further 400 exchanges by the end of next year.

UK Online - the ISP of rival LLU operator easynet - also offers unbundled 8 meg broadband with prices for this service starting at £29.99 a month. ®
