June date for Bluephone launch

five-four-three-etc

BT looks set to unveil its much-awaited Bluephone in the next fortnight or so.

Although a date hasn't been finalised for the commercial launch of the all singing all dancing "Batphone", El Reg has learned that a date around the middle of June is being eyed by execs at the monster telco.

Once the handset is given an airing, punters will be able to decide for themselves whether the phone really lets them make VoIP, mobile or landline calls from the same handset.

Although some doubts have been raised about the effectiveness of the Bluephone, on paper it sounds rather natty.

Use the phone near your home or office and the device will route the call using your landline connection. If you are out and about it will use the mobile network to connect calls. And if you are within a Wi-Fi hotspot the phone automatically uses VoIP to route the call.

BT's Bluephone had been tipped to be launched in Spring 2005. ®
