AMD expands Mobile Athlon 64 line-up

AMD today extended its Mobile Athlon 64 processor family with a further chip at the top of the range.

The 90nm, 754-pin 3700+ is pitched at mid-range notebooks, between chunky desktop-replacement jobs and the more svelte, thin'n'light machines AMD is targeting with its Turion line.

The chip itself is clocked to 2.4GHz, and like other members of the Mobile Athlon 64 family, contains 1MB of L2 cache on the die. It's similarly equipped with its own memory controller, capable of handling single-channel DDR SDRAM clocked at up to 400MHz.

In addition to 64-bit addressing, the 3700+ includes AMD's Enhanced Virus Protection (EVP) system, which is utilised by Windows XP Service Pack 2 to prevent code running on data-only memory partitions.

AMD said it was shipping the 3700+ immediately, for $336 a pop when sold in batches of 1000 chips. It also said Gateway is the first PC vendor to offer a notebook based on the new processor. ®
