Save the world, buy green stuff online

Do the hippy hippy shop

Adam Vaughan, managing editor of the gadget junkie's favourite, Stuff magazine, has started a greenie blog. Its all about ethical, environmentally friendly shopping and is loosely based on US site treehugger.com. Hippyshopper.com has all kinds of bits of kit that might well appeal to you, our lovely readers, so we thought we'd give it a nod.

We especially like the glowing brick - a nightlight that charges up on sunlight during daylight hours, and releases a phosphorescent glow over four hours, once the sun goes down. A kind of giant version of those glow-stars and spaceships we all stuck on our ceilings when we were kids.

You can also win Pandas (real ones, but not to take home) and solar iPod chargers. Just the thing to salve the conscience of the committed downloader.

As well as pointing out new green gadgets, clothes, food and so on, the site will give advice on recycling, and ways of reducing your impact on our rather beleaguered planet.

Bravo, we say. Only one problem, as a deeply cynical Vulture pointed out: if people spend ages on line buying their eco clothes, solar powered laptop chargers and organic baby clothes, how much fossil fuel will the ISP, the hosting company, and you, the computer user, be burning, eh? Not to mention wear and tear on keyboards.

El Reg proposes a simpler solution to the looming environmental crisis. We should abandon technology, houses and cars, and return to the trees, where we can swing about and eat ants with, um, Baloo, and King Louie. Last one back to the forest is a big fat monkey. ®
