Ebbers jury weighs up evidence

Deliberations and cogitations

The jury in the WorldCom fraud trial is to spend a second day weighing up the evidence against former WorldCom chief exec Bernie Ebbers Monday. Ebbers is charged with masterminding the $11bn (£5.8bn) accounting scandal that floored WorldCom in 2002.

Former CFO Scott Sullivan - who has already pleaded guilty to his part in the fraud - testified that Ebbers was behind the book fiddling. Ebbers, 63, denies any involvement in the accounting tricks insisting that he was "shocked" when he found out.

On Friday, the seven women and five men began their deliberations and are expected to continue today. After an hour of instruction from US District Judge Barbara Jones the jury retired to begin considering the evidence. They have already requested pieces of evidence and transcripts from the six-week trial.

If found guilty Ebbers could spend the rest of his life in jail. ®
