PCCW to spend £21m on UK wireless broadband

60 base stations

Hong Kong-based telco PCCW Ltd is to splash out US$40m (£21m) on wireless broadband in the UK next year.

Speaking to the South China Morning Post PCCW deputy chairman Jack So Chak-kwong said the cash would be used to establish up to 60 base stations in the UK although he declined to say exactly where or when.

PCCW has so far spent $40m (£21m) on establishing a wireless broadband network in the Thames Valley serving some 300,000 homes. Ultimately, PCCW could install around 900 base stations in the UK enabling people to hook up to its Netvigator service, he said.

Last week PCCW hit back at reports that it isd scaling back plans for a nationwide roll-out of its wireless broadband service in the UK because the investment was proving too expensive.

Speaking to The Register Joan Wagner, director of corporate communications at PCCW said: "When we launched in May we said we were evaluating six or more roll-out scenarios ranging from coverage in one area - through to rolling out to 75 per cent of UK households.

"Since then, the company has had very good feedback from the soft launch, in terms of proving the technology and achieving market share and we will progressively extend our coverage in the UK, taking a prudent and managed approach." ®
