Seagate seeks system builder support for 100GB notebook drive

Ideal for barebone laptops, apparently

Seagate has begun shipping the 100GB 2.5in notebook hard drive it launched back in June and is pitching the part at system builders keen to enter the mobile market using barebone laptops.

The Momentus 5400.2 runs its two 50GB platters at 5400rpm to help conserve power. Indeed, the company claims the drive uses up the same amount of energy as a 4200rpm part.

The manufacturer also touted the 5400.2's toughness, in particular its ability to withstand up to 900Gs of non-operating shock. That reliability is key to the unit's appeal to system builders, Seagate claimed. So too is the fact that each unit also comes with a five-year warranty.

Seagate is also preparing version of the drive that runs at 7200rpm. Both drives contain up to 8MB of cache. Lower capacity versions are also available. ®
