AMD goes mobile at 90nm with Athlon 3000+
Destined for thin and light notebooks
AMD today launched its latest mobile processor, the Athlon 64 3000+, the first new processor manufactured on its 90nm process. You'll be surprised to hear that it goes faster than its immediate predecessor, without drawing more power.
The Athlon 64 3000+ is destined to sit snugly inside many an Acer notebook. The Taiwanese vendor is launch day partner for the new chip, which it is introducing into its Ferrari-brand laptops, thus giving AMD an opportunity to draw a parallel between its performance in the silicon business and Ferrari's dominance of Formula 1.
Marty Seyer, general manager of AMD's microprocessor business unit, said the launch demonstrated that AMD "again outpaces the field" with its 32/64-bit processors for high-performance notebooks.
As with the existing AMD mobile processors, the Athlon 64 3000+ is compatible with wireless LAN 802.11a/b/g, and includes Enhanced Virus Protection (EVP). Users can switch this on when they've installed the ever-popular Service Pack 2 for XP.
