Motorola smart phone to offer 1.3Mp cam, Bluetooth

Motorola is preparing to update its MPx200 Windows Mobile-based smart phone with an updated version, the MPx220, according to company documents seen by The Register.

The 220's main advantage over its predecessor is the inclusion of a 1.3 megapixel digicam with multi-step 3x zoom, flash and self-portrait capabilities. Photos are displayed on the 220's 16-bit colour display. A secondary, external LCD provides 12-bit colour for photo caller ID.

The 220 will offer quad-band support - 850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz - GSM and GPRS connectivity - an improvement on the tri-band 200. Motorola has also added Bluetooth into the wireless mix.

The handset will run Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, stored on 64MB of Flash ROM. Like the 200, there's a Mini SD card slot capable of taking a 512MB memory card. The unit weighs 110g and measures 9 x 4.8 x 2cm. Its design is broadly similar to that of the 200, but the screen hinge is mounted further down the keypad half of the clamshell device. The 220 will be offered in silver and black colour schemes.

The MPx220's existence was first revealed last December when it emerged that Chinese manufacturer Chi Mei had been contracted to manufacture a bigger Motorola smart phone line-up.

Motorola expects to ship the MPx220 in Q3. Pricing has yet to be decided, and will depend on whichever network operators take on the handset. ®
