Cablevision - a cableco that serves 3m households in the New York metropolitan area - has sparked a price war.
Until July 31, new customers signing up to its triple play of digital TV, broadband Internet and phone service will get the bundle for $90 (£50) a month for the next 12 months. The triple-play package would normally cost punters $135 (£75) a month.
Cablevision is also offering the chance to hook up to its Optimum Online broadband service, with average downstream speeds of 3.5 Megabits per second, and one Megabit per second upstream - up to 100 times faster than dial-up and more than twice as fast as DSL.
Optimum Voice - its digital voice-over-cable service - offers unlimited calls across the US and Canada and includes a string of features including a Web portal that allows customers to listen to voicemail messages, manage settings and forward calls.
Patricia Gottesman, a senior VP at the cableco, said the deal offered "no gimmicks (and) no long-term contract commitments". Instead, it gives a "more compelling value proposition than is available from any of our competitors". ®
