Mobile graphics drives chip market growth

Big year-on-year gains

Mobile graphics chip shipments outperformed the sector average during Q1, showing year-on-year growth almost three times that experienced by the desktop graphics chip market, figures from market watcher Jon Peddie Research show.

Mobile chip shipments were up 29.1 per cent on Q1 2003's total, compared to year-on-year growth of just 9.9 per cent in the desktop space.

That said, the mobile market's seasonal reverse - shown by a sequential decline - was stronger. Shipments were down 12.7 per cent on the previous, Christmas quarter, compared to a 7.4 per cent decline for the PC graphics chip market as a whole, which saw year-on-year growth of 12.9 per cent.

Some 57.5 million graphics chip shipped in Q1. Most of them - 33 per cent - were made by Intel, which shows the strength of the integrated graphics business over the discrete sector, in which the chip giant is not a player.

Despite a 3.8 per cent decline in shipments, Intel's share was up from Q4's figure of 31.7 per cent, JPR's figures show. Nvidia also grew its market share, from 24.7 per cent to 27.2 per cent, on the back on shipments up two per cent sequentially.

ATI, by contrast, recorded a big decline in shipments - 11.5 per cent - enough to knock its share of the market down to 24 per cent, from 25.2 per cent.

VIA followed ATI's third-place charting with the number four slot and a 7.8 per cent share of the market. SiS came fifth, with a 6.9 per cent share. ®
