Wanna complain about spam? You must be joking

'Technical reason' blamed

The Information Commissioner has blamed a "technical reason" for its failure to publish the necessary e-paperwork for people to complain about receiving unwanted spam.

A number of readers contacted El Reg to say they'd tried to complain to the Information Commissioner - charged with enforcing the UK's new anti-spam laws which come into force today - but were left scratching their heads about exactly how to go about it.

A spokeswoman for the Information Commissioner admitted that a complaints form was supposed to be made available on its Web site this morning.

Unfortunately, a "technical reason" meant things didn't quite go to plan.

It's hoped a form - which can either be posted or emailed - should be up and running sometime this afternoon. Fingers' crossed.

Incidentally, the Information Commissioner has asked specifically for people not to "forward all your spam to us".

Why? "We have our own spam filters to protect our systems so if you just forward the spam message to us, it may never get past our own technical barriers," it says. Ho hum. ®
