TDK launches Mojo Flash MP3 player line

TDK has updated its Mojo family of CD/MP3 players with a set of four solid-state models - including one integrated into a pair of headphones.

The Mojo 1 isn't the first MP3 player to use this unusual but logical form factor - CoolNewGagdets.com's Sport MP3 got there ahead of the TDK product (see our

). Like the Sport MP3, the Mojo 1 offers 128MB of built-in Flash memory. However, the TDK device incorporates an SD/MMC slot to allow to expand that almost indefinitely. The Mojo 1 also features an FM stereo radio with 25 programmable station pre-sets.

The Mojo 1 packs in a simple equaliser with three pre-sets - four, if you include the 'off' setting - and track repeat and skip/preview facilities.

Powered by a AAA battery, the Mojo 1 can operate for ten hours on a single cell, said TDK.

While the Mojo 1 uses jukebox software to download tracks and apply EQ settings, the Mojo X is essentially a USB Flash drive with a built-in MP3 playback facility. It mounts as a removable drive on any USB-compatible OS, and tracks are copied over by drag and drop.

The Mojo X contains 128MB of memory and offers four EQ pre-sets, though unlike the Mojo 1, this one you can program yourself. A repeat function provides instant re-plays of single or every song on the player. Some 12 hours of playback are provided by a single AAA battery.

The Mojo 128F and 256F players offer similar playback durations, also on single AAA batteries. The two players offer 128MB and 256MB of on-board memory, plus an SD/MMC slot for more. Both feature an FM stereo radio, which not only offers 20 programmable station pre-sets, but can save broadcasts to memory.

Both players also allow you to record voice memos, but the 256F also contains a speech synthesiser to read out text files stored on the device. Both devices feature six EQ pre-sets, and allow you to make your own EQ settings. In addition to the Mojo X's repeat playback options, the 128F and 256F offer random track playback.

Both use TDK's UniFi software to grab songs from the host PC, but the company also bundles plug-ins for Real One Player, Windows Media Player, MoodLogic and Apple's iTunes.

All four players go on sale in the US later this month. The Mojo 1 will retail for around $180, the Mojo X for $100, and the Mojo 128F and 256F for $140 and $190, respectively. ®
