118 888 boss quits

Personal reasons

The boss of directory enquiries (DQ) newcomer - Conduit - quit the company on Friday citing personal reasons.

Liam Young's departure comes just a month after DQ deregulation in the UK, which opened up the £300 million market to competition.

Conduit - which is known in the UK by its 11 88 88 number and brand - has spent a fortune plugging the service. But according to reports call numbers have not been as high as predicted which has seemingly resulted in a revenue shortfall.

No one at Conduit was available to comment at the time of writing on Mr Young's departure or the appointment of his successor, Conduit chairman Eddie Kerr.

Only last week BT reported that the number of calls made to DQ services plummeted by almost half in the two weeks after the switchover to new 118 services.

It seems the tidal wave of publicity surrounding the different DQ services on offer has merely highlighted the expense of phoning up for numbers.

As a result it seems that people are using phone books or looking online to save money. ®
