Veritas preps file system for 9i RAC and HP-UX

Giving HP some love

Veritas is working to prove its has as much love for HP as it does for Sun Microsystems with the release of a file system for Oracle 9i RAC running on HP-UX.

The product is called the Veritas Database Edition/Advanced Cluster for Oracle 9i Real Application Clusters (RAC). It's not the most exciting name, but it does the trick. The file system is meant to give 9i RAC on HP-UX users some management features that don't typically exist when running 9i RAC on raw disk.

Using raw disk tends to provide the best overall performance, but Veritas says that the management tools it provides make up for any trade-offs. The Veritas file system gives users a nice GUI to handle disk and cluster management. The software can look out over various servers and storage systems and puts all of the hardware in a single panel for the users. In addition, Veritas can help admins resize the amount of storage allocated for a database and simplify failover operations.

Veritas has provided this product to Sun Solaris users for some time. The entire stable of Veritas products runs on Solaris, while support for HP-UX, AIX and Linux is trickling in over time.

Veritas needs to buddy up with other vendors these days to meet its optimistic growth targets and to offset any losses in the Solaris business. Sun is, after all, doing what it can to woo customers off Veritas's file systems and volume manager and onto its own kit.

The adoption of Oracle 9i RAC has been a tad slow thus far. It's most often promoted by Oracle as an option for Intel server users trying to mimic the capabilities of Unix SMPs on low-cost hardware. Unix, however, clearly is still of interest. ®
