Hynix ready to mass produce DDR 500
First ever introduction of 256Mb parts
Hynix yesterday pledged to put 256Mb 500MHz DDR SDRAM chips into volume production next month - the first of their kind, it claims.
The company hopes to ride the wave of users and vendors moving up to high-end DDR, primarily 333MHz and 400MHz versions. Memory module sellers are already offering DDR 500 parts, but these tend to be overclocked 400MHz parts and are only sold as being compatible with specific systems.
Hynix said it expects to charge 10-20 per cent more for DDR 500 parts than DDR 400. DDR 400 prices are currently rising on the back of limited supply and strong demand. According to Taiwanese memory trader DRAMeXchange, contract prices for DDR have stabilised but spot prices are continuing to grow.
Hynix said it the new chips will be fabbed at 130nm and be offered in a variety of packages. ®
