BT inks US Wi-Fi roaming deal

Roaman Empire

BT has struck a roaming agreement with US outfit Airpath Wireless Inc that means its punters will be able to use Wi-Fi on both sides of the Atlantic.

From September, BT Openzone punters will be able to access their service at 350 hotspots in the US. Airpath - whose network is made up of locations set up by different ISPs - currently has access to around 1,500 hotspots, with this figure set to rise to 4,600 over the next year.

The two-way agreement means US visitors who are customers of any of the ISPs in Airpath's network can now use BT Openzone sites when in the UK.

In a statement Todd B Myers, chief exec of Airpath, said: "This agreement is tangible proof of what we at Airpath have always believed, that worldwide roaming must be achieved to extend the available footprint for providers and usability of end users."

Together with other roaming agreements already in place, BT Openzone customers will soon be able to use more than 1,710 Wi-Fi access points worldwide including 700 sites now available in the UK. ®
