3Dlabs brings Wildcat III, 4 cards to Linux

3Dlabs has posted Linux drivers for its Wildcat 4 and Wildcat III graphics cards, the company said today. The cards are aimed at high-end scientific and content creation applications and are pitched against Nvidia's Quadro series and ATI's FireGL cards.

The Wildcat 4 series, comprising the 7110 and 7120 AGP 8x cards, provide 256MB and 384MB of DDR SDRAM, respectively, and are capable of churning out up to 37.9 million triangles per second and 400 million pixels per second. The Wildcat III 6110 and 6210 are the previous generation of the technology.

Linux drivers for all four cards are available now from 3dlabs' download site.

Notebooks

Toshiba has extended its Portege line with two new Centrino-based models, including the R100, the first notebook to contain a 1.8in 40GB hard drive, the company said today.

The R100 is based on a low-voltage Pentium M running at 1GHz, while the Portege M100 uses the 1.2GHz chip. Both offer Intel's Pro Wireless 802.11b adaptor card, 256MB RAM, 12.1in LCD, 10/100 wired Ethernet, 56Kbps modem and dual USB 2.0 ports.

The R100 weighs 2.4lbs (1.1kg) and contains two batteries, a slimline low-weight Lithium-Ion Polymer unit providing up to two hours of operating time, plus a second, add-on unit that extends the total battery life to 6.5 hours.

The 4.2lb (1.9kg) M100 can run for up to 8.5 hours with a second battery. It bundles a SelectBay DVD-ROM drive, and can use Tecra range docking kit. It costs $2199 in the US; the R100 costs $2299. ®
