Easynet undercuts BT with unbundled leased line
BT mum on whether it will follow suit
Easynet has unveiled a new unbundled leased line broadband product which it claims is up to half the price of traditional services offered by BT.
Aimed at business users, SureStream costs just under £6,000 a year for a 2Mbps connection. New punters also have to cough up £1,995 for a one-off set-up and installation charge.
Easynet claims SureStream offers business punters a high-speed dedicated leased line that has a 1:1 contention ratio supported by a service level agreement (SLA).
SureStream is available at speeds of up to 4Mbps rather than the BT's limit of 2Mbps, it said in a statement.
The service should be available in most major business centres across the UK. So far Easynet has unbundled 81 exchanges in the UK and is looking to unbundle at least a further 70 during 2003.
Said CEO David Rowe in a statement: "This represents a big market opportunity and a first for Europe; to deliver the last mile for a traditional leased line based on local exchanges and not managed by the incumbent."
Recently, there has been speculation that BT might be about to cut the cost of its leased lines. However, a spokesman for the telco told The Register that it had "no immediate plans to do so at the moment". ®
