Nvidia unwraps expected GeForce FX chips

5600 and 5200 fill out range

Nvidia yesterday unveiled its two latest GeForce FX chips, as anticipated.

The GeForce FX 5600 and 5200 target mainstream and budget market segments, respectively, joining the top-end 5800.

The 5600 matches the 5800 on feature set, but lacks the latter's support for DDR 2 frame buffer memory. That said, it supports up to 256MB of RAM, twice as much as the 5800 and the 5200.

The 5200 doesn't support DDR 2 either, and lacks Nvidia's Intellisample anti-aliasing technology. Its USP, says Nvidia, is its low price: $79.

Nvidia cites performance figures of 200 million vertices per second, 88 million and 81 million, for the 5800, 5600 and 5200, respectively. Like the 5800, the new parts support DirectX 9.

The 5600 and 5200 will ship next month, Nvidia said - hopefully without the shipment troubles that have hampered the release of the top-end chip, Nvidia's first 0.13 micron part. ®
