Ran Mokady takes helm at Pogo

IP play

Pogo, the UK PDA maker, today rises from the ashes with a new CEO-cum-investor, a change of business model, and a slightly new name.

The new CEO of Pogo Mobile Solutions (as it is now called) is Ran Mokady, wireless entrepreneur and former Microsoft bigwig, where he ran the feature phone division. You can read his CV here.

The sale of the assets of Pogo Technology were completed on Monday, December 10, and since then, Pogo Mobile Solutions has been racing to get the business up and running, Mokady said.

Mokady approached Pogo, upon reading an article in The Register about Pogo Technology's liquidation. Web services for existing customers should be restored early next week, he said: "I'd love to do it earlier, but I don't want to risk disappointing people." First of all, there are a couple of minor technical issues to resolve and one more contract to sign.

Joining Mokady are two ex-Pogo Technology execs, Stephen and Matthew Woolf, as commercial director and CTO. Also climbing on board are 'around 15' hardware and software engineers. Which means that around 20 people have lost their jobs in the restructure which saw Pogo Technology placed into liquidation.

The new business model will see Pogo Mobile Solutions focus on an IP licensing model, based on its "unique patent-pending compression algorithms, device and network software".

This seems sensible, as the company is much too small to be a big-time manufacturer. Here is some company spiel: "Pogo will work with partners to deliver an easy to use, competitively priced, totally integrated, end-to-end mobile data solution over GSM and GPRS networks.... Our technology enables a simple to use, connected, PDA experience at mobile phone prices, delivering enhanced functionality at a lower cost." ®
