Wanadoo boasts 1m broadband punters

Bon

Wanadoo has almost one million broadband punters in Europe, the Internet division of France Telecom announced today.

Over the last year the number of broadband subscribers has doubled, and over the last three months a third of all Wanadoo's new punters have opted for broadband.

In all, Wanadoo had 7.1 million Internet access customers, recruiting 307,000 new customers during Q3 with 148,000 of those signing up for broadband.

Wanadoo's broadband customers make up 14 per cent of its customer base - double that for the same period last year.

This growth in its subscriber base comes against a 30 per cent increase in revenues to E527m for the three months to the end of September.

In a conference call Nicolas Dufourcq, Chairman and CEO of Wanadoo, told journalists that the company is close to breaking even.

However, the performance of Wanadoo UK (Freeserve) is certain to raise the odd eyebrow or two.

Although it now has 2.55 million active users, compared with 2.08m at the same time last year, only a third of those people pay for the service. The rest still enjoy the subscription "free" part of the service that gave Freeserve its name.

With 855,000 paying subscribers, Freeserve is way behind its rival, AOL UK, which recently announced it had more than two million paying punters.

And on the issue of broadband, Freeserve has 28,000 subscribers in the UK. Perhaps that is why Wanadoo UK (sorry, Freeserve) announced today that it is cutting the cost of its broadband service to compete head-to-head with AOL UK. ®
