Webmaster conference held in London pub

We'll drink to that

Alerting all BOFHs. Do you find the grind of strategy briefing, product pitches and workshops a tedious interlude at conferences before getting down to the real business of getting on with some serious drinking?

Keep a date open in your diary on October 12 for the second annual Webmasterworld Pub Conference. There's no padding - no strategy briefings, no product pitches, not exhibitions, no workshops. But there is a place to hang out with like-minded professionals. In the pub.

Organiser Brett Tabke explains: "The most attractive thing about conferences is meeting people in our industry and this often takes place at the hotel, restaurant or pub after the event. Those meetings often are referred to as 'the conference after the conference' and often end up being the most rewarding aspect of the entire event," he said.

"We are all tech people and bored at regular conferences, so we cut out the middle man and get to the point - the bar!"

Organised by the members of WebmasterWorld.com the conference is targeted at the independent web professional. The primary focus of the Pub Conference, which will be attended by webmasters from around the globe, will be the role of Search Engines in the marketing and promotion of web sites.

So who'll be speaking at the conference, we asked.

Tabke retorts: "We don't need no stinking speakers - we have an open bar!"

The conference is strictly informal, with no set agenda. Instead it will have a peer-to-peer event where the participants decide what they wish to discuss, as well as an opportunity to have face to face meetings.

Attendance at the not-for profit event is limited to 200 people and Tabke is confident of making up the numbers following the earlier successes of the first PubCon in London last year, and BarCon this spring in California. The organisers tell us they have people flying in from all over the World (including attendees from Australia, Singapore, Europe and North America) for the event.

But how to put the trip down to expenses and avoid awkward questions from management about its purpose? Easy, said Tabke.

"If the boss asks why you are going to a Pub for a conference, just tell him it's for website PUBlishers," he said.

Pub Conference takes place on October 12 in Cittie of Yorke pub, 22 High Holborn, London. Early registration for the event costs £45. ®
