NEC jobs in Scotland safe
...but only just makes it in Livingston
Some 155 jobs at NEC's PC manufacturing plant in Livingston, Scotland, are safe - for the time being at least.
There was intense speculation that NEC intended to pull the plug on the plant following a slump in demand for PCs.
However, in a statement issued this afternoon the company said it was "keeping desktops and servers production capacity in Livingston" although it admitted that it was looking at the plant's future.
It said: "As far as our facility in Livingston is concerned, NEC plans to keep capacity but is assessing the viability of maintaining in house or transferring the Livingston operation to an OEM manufacturer."
Charles Matine, a spokesman for NEC told The Register: "There is no threat at this stage for jobs. The plant remains open."
Earlier today union representatives were pessimistic about the future and expected NEC to announce job cuts today. ®
