BT Ignite culls 2,200 jobs

Creates 1,200

Some 2,200 jobs are to go at BT Ignite as part of ongoing restructuring at BT's corporate IT services division.

A spokesman for BT said these were not new job losses but ones that had already been flagged-up by the company.

At the same time BT Ignite is also looking to create around 1,200 new jobs as it shifts its focus from building its network to attracting and retaining more customers.

Half the job losses are expected to come from the UK.

Elsewhere, BT declined to comment on reports that it is interested in buying Energis' failed German division.

On Friday the struggling telco pulled the plug on its Energis Ision business taking a £500 million hit in the process.

The Observer cited unnamed sources who claim that BT is sniffing around looking to pick-up the business for a bargain price.

The newspaper also reports that there are now two bidders fighting it out to buy Energis' UK operation.
A decision on the outcome of that could come by the end of the month.

Last month Energis pulled the plug on its Swiss operation. ®
