Easynet flies LLU flag

Pinch, punch...white rabbit...Jefferson Airplane

Easynet reckons it's in a good position to capitalise on the growth in business broadband services in the UK.

Speaking today at the company's AGM chairman Keith Todd reaffirmed his commitment to local loop unbundling (LLU) and reckons the company is in a "strong position and well placed to succeed in this rapidly developing market".

He said easynet now had unbundled 30 exchanges and signed up more than 300 businesses on its own loops

Its strategy appears to focus on building critical mass in an area by reselling a branded BT wholesale product before switching them to unbundled lines.

Explained Mr Todd: "When critical mass is within reach, we initiate the installation of easynet equipment in the BT local exchange.

"...we have more than 4,500 businesses currently subscribing to the high-end easynet branded BT DSL product, the majority of which we intend to migrate to our own DSL loops in due course."

Looking ahead easynet intends to open further exchanges in Greater London, Reading, Leeds and Scotland.

Easynet is one of half-a-dozen companies currently involved in LLU in the UK. Once perceived as a mass market option LLU now appears to be the domain of niche areas.

While the number of operators involved in LLU has fallen over the last 18 months or so it's understood that new operators could be prepared to enter the market. ®
