One2One to launch GPRS “within two months”

One2One has finally given some indication when it will launch its long awaited GPRS service.

The mobile operator, which will be rebranded as T-Mobile by parent Deutsche Telecom on Thursday this week, has said since July last year that its launch of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) services was imminent.

Since that time the mobile operator has said "the One2One GPRS network is built, tested and ready for launch", a line fed to Reg readers who have quizzed the operator on the point.

A spokeswoman for the company told us service would definitely become available this year, and under close questioning, said that this would be launched "within the next two months".

Which means that all the GPRS services and applications One2One have been promoting over the last couple of months will finally become available. These include GPRS roaming between T-Mobile networks in Germany, Austria, Great Britain, USA and the Czech Republic and a deal to offer small businesses
GPRS services on Dell laptops.

GPRS phones are designed to offer an "always-on" Internet connection at between two to three times the speed of current mobiles, and are seen by the industry as a stepping stone to 3G, which promises far faster data rates. One2One's rivals BT Cellnet, Vodafone and Orange launched GPRS services last year. ®
