Intel preps 845GLL – report

Cheapo graphics

Intel is prepping the launch of an ultra cheap - sub $25 - integrated graphics chipset, the 845GL, according to Taiwanese newswire Digitimes.

Intel is currently taking soundings from Taiwanese mobo makers and if the feedback is good, it will launch the 845GLL in May, sources tell Digitimes.

The 845GLL (the extra L stands for "Light", apparently) will go head-to-head against SiS' integrated P4 chipset, the 650 series. Intel will use a cheaper south bridge supporting USB 1.1, in contrast withj the 845G and the 845GL, which use more expensive USB 2.0-based ICH4 south bridge chips.

This will enable it to compete better on price with SiS which has dug deep into Intel's customer base with a several big OEM wins for the 650, Digitimes notes. ®
