Intel launches 2.4GHz P4 (next week)

Fastest P4 yet

Intel next week launches the 2.4GHz Pentium 4, replacing the 2.2GHz version, as its fastest desktop P4.

As per always, engineering samples and embargo breakers are already on sale in Tokyo.

What else? The 2.4GHz P4 is built using 0.13m technolgy and will be the first commercially available Intel CPU to roll off the 300mm wafer production line. The combination of these two manufacturing technologies means smaller, cheaper, less power-hungry CPUs.

In OEM quantities of 1,000, the chip costs c.$560.

Intel is also prepping two new chipsets, the much-delayed 845G, which features integrated graphics and support for DDR DRAM and USB 2.0 support; and the 850E. This incorporates a 533MHz system bus and is designed for P4s using RDRAM memory. The 845G will launch first, while the 850E will launch on May 6, according to CNET. ®
