Symbian finds new CEO – at Psion

All in the family...

Symbian's search for a new CEO, following the sudden departure of Colly Myers last month, has been remarkably short and narrow, apparently. Steering the company from April 8th, says an announcement today, will be David Levin, who is currently CEO of Psion. And keeping it all in the family, his replacement at Psion will be Ian McElroy, currently CEO of Psion-Teklogix.

Levin has just presided over one of the worst years in Psion's history, but it would be entirely unfair to say this was his fault; his strategy of moving the company's PDA business into all-in one cellular units (hence nice subsidies from the networks) was more or less totalled by Motorola's cancellation of the joint Odin project, and this itself was haveily influential in Psion's pulling out of the consumer market last year.

Now with Sybian's customers finally getting their act together to ship consumer Symbian OS devices, David has just about got there anyway, but with a different company. We wish him well.

Psion, incidentally, announced a loss of £17.4 million on turnover of £181.1 million for the year today, against a profit of £2.7 million on turnover of £21.9.7 million for 2000.
