Starbucks wireless wonder goes Titsup

MobileStar lays off 88 of its 88 workers...

Wireless network provider MobileStar canned its entire staff this week and is flogging off all its remaining assets to anyone who may actually want it.

The wireless provider rose to prominence when it won a deal to install wireless 802.11 networks in over 3,000 Starbucks stores around the US, providing free access to those with MobileStar subscriptions. So far it had "wired" about 500 stores and it unsure at this stage what will happen to the service now. The company was also wiring airports and various other business areas for use.

Early yesterday, online dot bomb observer FuckedCompany.com started a rumour that MobileStar Network had dismissed all its workers after a deal from Nextel fell through. Accordingly, it added the company to its 'Hall of Fame'.

Later on, CNET reported that MobileStar Network had laid off 88 workers on Tuesday, which its source described as "everybody" and was trying to sell any remaining assets.

The article says MobileStar was "trying to raise cash for at least six months and had reached a tentative deal just a few weeks ago, but that 'went away' ... A spokesman said he could neither confirm nor deny the layoffs." The company has hired Diablo Management Group to "oversee an orderly sales of the assets".

Unsurprisingly, there is no information regarding this on the company's Web site. ®
