Networking bug makes Macs hang up

Disconnected

While Apple Mac OS X is winning plaudits for its networking support, a bug in MacOS is causing many Mac users to see red. Many are finding themselves disconnected from Windows and Unix servers after installing MacOS 9.2.1 and OS 9.1.

A reader whose performed packet analysis on his network, which uses Mac clients with Windows 2000 and Solaris 8 servers, both of which support Apple's file sharing protocol (AFP) says that in each case the last packet sent is a tcp_disconnect from the Mac.

"There is a lot of info out there about this problem minus a solution," he writes. "If this were Microsoft everyone would be screaming."

There's more documentation at the excellent MacWindows website.

Apple has not responded yet. ®
