Leifur Eiriksson is ours – Iceland

It's grim up North

Norway - is it part of Europe or what?

I have a son who just started in high school. He is taking an advanced course in history. One of the first items discussed in his class was the importance of taking the time to do the proper research on any topic he will investigate this year.

I will show him your article to demonstrate that even adults have difficulties mastering this.

Is Leifur Eiriksson Norwegian? Hardly, you could claim perhaps he was a Greenlander, the place he lived, Icelander the country he came from, but not a Norwegian.

Sincerely

Bragi Valgeirsson

In your article, Norway - is it part of Europe or what?, you mention five "Famous Norwegians" by name (four of them Norwegian but all of them dead): one rather unimportant composer (Grieg); one overestimated playwright ("lbsen" (misspelled for Ibsen)); the most infamous Norwegian German-servant during World War II (Quisling); one lunatic (Munch); and one Icelander ("Leif Ericson" (misspelled for Leifur Eiríksson) who never even visited Norway.

Having read this, one is tempted to ask: The Register - is it written by idiots or what?

His family having resided in Iceland for a number of years (number => 100) would have qualified for Icelandic citizenship even under our current strict immigration laws. As everyone of import knows, Iceland was settled in AD 874 by Ingolfur Arnarson and fellow tax evaders from Norway fleeing the evil regime of Hairy Harry (Haraldur Harfagri) after he had the unified Norway and instituted taxes!

I'm sure today's oppressed and overtaxed population would follow this fine example if all the good spots, like Spain for example, weren't taken already which only leaves us the option of going off-planet (No spacesuit, no travel).

Anyway, the Norwegians have been doing their level best at trying to convince the world that Leifur is a son of Norway when in fact at most he's a third cousin on their mothers side. But thanks to us alert Icelanders (well, me at least) this evil plot is foiled yet again.
