Intel fleshes out mobile P4 roadmap

Faster, smaller, cooler

Intel Developer Forum Intel will intro mobile versions of its Pentium 4 processor by the first half of next year and ramp up to 2GHz by the end of next year, attendees at IDF were told today.

This is in line with our roadmap but takes it a little further in being specific about the speed mobile P4 will reach by the end of the year. We didn't have anything beyond the release of a 1.7GHz Mobile Pentium 4 in May.

Frank Spindler, general manager of Intel's mobile platforms group, said that mobile P4s will have all the usual features of desktop processors but will include mobile-specific features such as Enhanced SpeedStep technology, and Deeper Sleep for lower power consumption. The processors will be made using Intel's 0.13 micron fabrication process.

Driver enhancements and features that will allow the brightness of screens to be dynamically reduced could squeeze down power consumption by up to 30 per cent more. Mobile P4s will appear in tablet form-factor PCs as well as laptops and notepads, Spindler predicts.

Looking further ahead Intel will introduce its next-generation mobile processor architecture Banias in the first half of 2003. This features yet more mobile orientated features such as micro-ops fusion, which allows more than one instruction to be executed at the same time; aggressive clock gating (which involve shutting off the clock to inactive portions of a processor) and special sizing techniques so that the processor is optimised down to the transistor level.

Intel execs weren't prepared to divulge details of the transition from P4 to Banias, because it was "too far ahead". ®
